A fashion brand that offers a positive alternative to the fashion industry.
For my zero-waste label, called Free Prisoner, I want to achieve that we become aware of the overproduction in the fashion industry and deal better with our precious textiles. 60 billion m2 textile of the 400 billion we produce annually is left on the cutting room floor. Most of these leftovers end up in Asian landfills, far from sight, far from mind. That means 15% of the energy and money spent on growing, harvesting, weaving and shipping is spent on nothing- aside from polluting. Because of this textile waste, a lot of extra unnecessary pollution of chemicals, water and CO2 is produced. The 15% waste is actually the consequence of reckless use of curves in conventional pattern making. As cutting and manufacturing are often outsourced in developing countries, occidental fashion designers never have to face the amount of waste created by their own collections. It is a secondary concern for them. Not for me!
From an early age I have been busy emphasizing social problems through my designs. I believe that telling a story through fashion can have a major impact on how we think about politics, the environment and cultures, for example.
Free Prisoner: A captive society struggling for freedom.
With my label I strive for a circular economy, think of clothing that is compostable. No (micro) plastic or polyester. I believe that fashion should be sustainable. That's why I report the excesses and wastes of our society. My point of view is that sustainable fashion and fashion should not be different entities, but all fashion should just be as sustainable as we can make it. As designers, we are putting new things out into the world, and I believe we are responsible for whatever effect they have to the environment and in society. My dream is to have my own label that helps society move forward and informs. What I do with zero-waste design is puzzling with patterns and redesigning them so that the garment can be cut on the full surface of the fabric.
I get my inspiration from us, humans. The body that moves like dancers full of emotion, choices & imperfections. The use of a statement in my work is a drive for me. I want to make fashion as art, fashion with a story, so also pieces that you don't necessarily wear but that you can experience.
Where does your money go?
I need material to set up my label, but also think of machines, a studio, a website, labels, etc. I would like to set up exhibitions in collaboration with artists, to convey my story as strongly as possible. My designs will consist of recycled and sustainable materials, such as hemp or second-hand fabrics. With your contribution I can make my dream come true and offer a new way of designing and producing!
