A new act in the life of Casaletto

On the land of Acqua Calda, time seems to have stopped. The old house standing on the top of the hill, contemplating the landscape, is the witness of another time. Yet, rather than a nostalgic left over, its emerging past is a place of potential. A potential for a possible future, for a new act in the life of Casaletto.

Between nature and culture, between fields and mountains, the old country house, or casale is located at only 60 kilometers from Rome. The genius loci of that place makes it a retreat, an observatory, a common ground. It stimulates the senses of the explorators entering its territory.

Among these explorators, us, two young architects, owners and initiators of the project Casaletto. In addition to our affinity for transformations of places with a history, this project translates our energy to activate a little piece of countryside as a reaction to the actual issues in the cities. The process of metamorphose

Casaletto embraces the process of transformation of a place as a ground for interaction, exchange of knowledge and experimentation on architecture, art and local culture. Old traditions are transmitted, but are also the base for new interpretations.

From a charming aging structure to an inspiring off-grid residency, the retreat will evolve progressively through a series of phases, from the first aid operations to landscape and gardening. They are all based on an active collaboration between volunteers and specialists.

In this way, result and process have the same importance in the project and will both be the stage for exchange and creativity. As such, Casaletto as an artistic retreat will not be only seen as a product but as a constantly evolving project.

An off-grid retreat

The renovation will have an accent on collaboration but also on the respect of the wild natural environment around the casale. Thus the retreat will be entirely self-sufficient, off-grid.

The land is situated on a very fertile topography containing natural water springs where we will enlarge the existing well into a modern artesian well. The South orientation of the slope will allow us to make full use of the strong sunlight and supply the energetic needs of the retreat.

Last but not least, the existing vegetation and oliveto will be soon accompanied by a lush garden taking inspiration from the Roman gardens from Antiquity.

Why we need your help

Next to our own personal, professional and financial involvement in the renovation and development of Casaletto, we need your help to reinvent a new act in the life of that beautiful place.

A new roof is urgently needed to consolidate the structure and its current fragile state. As such, it becomes the emblematic kick-off of the renovation, most crucial first-aid operation and symbol of the protected retreat. By taking part in this campaign, you will help transforming an abandoned country house into an inspiring artistic retreat, by effectively financing the construction of its new roof.

The new roof

• 1 installation of scaffoldings on the front and side facades
• 2 demolition of the existing roof structure: the wooden beams in a bad state are disposed
• 3 existing ceramic roof tiles are stored: the top ones will be reused for the new roof as the flat ones currently covering the ceiling will be reused as flooring on the ground floor
• 4 cast and pouring of a concrete belt in three consecutive layers for the stabilisation of the stone walls
• 5 installation of 14 prefabricated wooden elements creating a light triangulated new structure
• 6 placing of thermic isolation
• 7 covering of the new roof with the restored ceramic tiles

Een nieuwe act in het leven van Casaletto

Op het land van Acqua Calda lijkt tijd stil te staan. Het oude huis op de heuvel overziet het landschap, en is de getuige van een andere tijd. In plaats van een nostalgisch overblijfsel, is het zichtbare verleden een plek met potentieel. Een potentieel voor een mogelijke toekomst, voor een nieuwe act in het leven van Casaletto.

Het oude landhuis of casale ligt slechts 60 kilometer van Rome, t_ussen natuur en cultuur, tussen velden en bergen_. De genius loci van die plek maakt het een retraite, een observatorium, een gemeenschappelijk grond. Het stimuleert de zintuigen van de ontdekkingsreizigers die zijn territorium betreden.

Onder deze ontdekkingsreizigers, wij, twee jonge architecten, eigenaren en initiatiefnemers van het project Casaletto. Samen met onze affiniteit met transformaties van plaatsen met een geschiedenis, vertaalt dit project onze energie om een stukje platteland te activeren als reactie op de actuele problematiek in steden. We manifesteren voor platteland!

Het proces van metamorfose

Casaletto omarmt het transformatieproces van een plek als een basis voor interactie, kennisuitwisseling en experimenten met architectuur, kunst en lokale cultuur. Oude tradities worden overgedragen, maar vormen ook de basis voor nieuwe interpretaties.

Van een charmante vergrijzende structuur tot een inspirerende off-grid residentie, de retraite zal geleidelijk evolueren door een reeks fasen, van de eerste hulpwerkzaamheden tot landschap en tuinieren. Ze zijn allemaal gebaseerd op een actieve samenwerking tussen vrijwilligers en specialisten.

Op deze manier hebben resultaat en proces hetzelfde belang in het project en zullen beide het podium zijn voor interactie en creativiteit. Zo zal Casaletto als artistiek retraite niet alleen een product zijn, maar ook een voortdurend evoluerend project.

Een off-grid retraite

Bij de renovatie zal het accent liggen op samenwerking maar ook op het respect voor de wilde natuur rondom de casale. De retraite zal dus volledig zelfvoorzienend zijn, off-grid.

Het land is gelegen op een zeer vruchtbare topografie met natuurlijke waterbronnen waar we de bestaande put zullen uitbouwen tot een moderne geboorde put. Door de zuidelijke oriëntatie van de helling kunnen we optimaal gebruik maken van het sterke zonlicht om de energetische behoeften van de retraite te voorzien.

Last but not least zullen de bestaande vegetatie en oliveto binnenkort gekoppeld aan een weelderige tuin, geïnspireerd op de antieke Romeinse tuinen.

Waarom wij jullie hulp nodig hebben

Naast onze eigen persoonlijke, professionele en financiële betrokkenheid bij de renovatie en ontwikkeling van Casaletto, hebben we jullie hulp nodig om een nieuwe act in het leven van die prachtige plek te openen.

Een nieuw dak is dringend nodig om de structuur in zijn huidige kwetsbare staat te consolideren. Zo wordt het dak de emblematische kick-off van de renovatie, meest cruciale hulpwerkzaamheid en symbool van de bescherming van de retraite. Door deel te nemen aan deze campagne help je mee om een verlaten landhuis om te vormen tot een inspirerend artistiek retraite.

Het nieuwe dak

• 1 steigers aan voor- en zijgevels
• 2 afbraak van de bestaande dakconstructie: de houten balken in slechte staat worden afgevoerd
• 3 bestaande keramische dakpannen worden opgeslagen: de bovenste worden hergebruikt voor het nieuwe dak, de platte dakpannen die momenteel het plafond bedekken worden hergebruikt als vloerbedekking op de begane grond
• 4 gieten en storten van een betonband in drie lagen voor de stabilisatie van de stenen muren
• 5 installatie van 14 geprefabriceerde houten elementen voor een licht driehoekige nieuwe structuur
• 6 plaatsen van thermische isolatie
• 7 bedekking van het nieuwe dak met de gerestaureerde keramische pannen
