What is the British Music Festival Holland?

The British Music Festival Holland is a new music festival based in The Hague. Its first edition will take place in the Waalse Kerk in Noordeinde. The idea of ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​this festival was based on the love for British classical music. how so? To bring well known, lesser known and completely new British music to the wider audience of the Netherlands. It is a genre of classical music that is rarely played in regular concerts and festivals, so my aim is to put it in the spotlight and give the audience a fresh new perspective of the wonder that is British Music.

Het British Music Festival Holland is een nieuw muziekfestival gevestigd in Den Haag. De eerste editie vindt plaats in de Waalse Kerk in Noordeinde. Het idee van dit festival was gebaseerd op de liefde voor Britse klassieke muziek. Hoezo? Bekende, minder bekende en geheel nieuwe Britse muziek naar het brede publiek van Nederland brengen. Het is een genre van klassieke muziek dat zelden wordt gespeeld in reguliere concerten en festivals, dus mijn doel is om het in de schijnwerpers te zetten en het publiek een fris nieuw perspectief te geven op het wonder dat Britse muziek is.

The BMFH Idea

The idea of ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​the British Music Festival is to celebrate British music old and new in the format of a multi day festival which will include a series of concerts bearing a different theme. The concerts include both lunchtime and evening concerts with an informal morning performance.

The festival will include outstanding musicians who are based in the Netherlands, pre concert talks and a wonderful chamber music filled weekend!

The first festival will include recent prizewinner of the Oskar Back Violin Competition Isobel Warmelink, cellist Jobine Siekeman, pianist Rik Kuppens and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra violinist Coroline Groen. That is, to name a few! Furthermore, I have commissioned British composer based in The Hague Franki Dodwell to write a piece for Coraline Groen and Rik Kuppens which will be premiered during the festival.

The BMFH will have a yearly/bi-annual edition of the festival.

The BMFH Idea

Het idee van het British Music Festival is om oude en nieuwe Britse muziek te vieren in de vorm van een meerdaags festival met een reeks concerten met een ander thema . De concerten omvatten zowel lunch- als avondconcerten met een informele ochtendvoorstelling.

Het festival omvat uitstekende muzikanten die in Nederland zijn gevestigd, pre-concertgesprekken en een prachtig kamermuziekweekend!

Op het eerste festival staan ​​de recente prijswinnaar van het Oskar Back Vioolconcours Isobel Warmelink, cellist Jobine Siekeman, pianist Rik Kuppens en violiste Coroline Groen van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. Dat wil zeggen, om er maar een paar te noemen! Verder heb ik de in Den Haag wonende Britse componist Franki Dodwell opdracht gegeven om voor Coraline Groen en Rik Kuppens een stuk te schrijven dat tijdens het festival in première gaat.

Who's behind the BMFH?

Harry Broom

Born in Birmingham, UK I started to play the cello at age 6. At 18 I auditioned for 4 major conservatories in the UK and was offered places in all institutions. He chose to accept a place offered with a considerable scholarship at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for my Bachelor Studies where I studied with Ulrich Heinen. In 2019 he was accepted into the Royal Conservatory of The Hague for pre-master and then onto the Master to study with Larissa Groeneveld. Harry graduated this year achieving a 9.5 with distinction.

Aside from his education, I am also a freelancer in the Netherlands having performed recently for festival Dag in de Branding, the Residentie Orkest and chamber concerts with Pelargos Quartet across the Netherlands. Next year he will be regularly traveling to play with the Halle Orchestra in Manchester, UK.

The motivation behind the festival

The motivation of the British Music Festival Holland was during Harry's master studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Moving away from the UK initiated a keen interest in British music as he discovered it isn't played or known that much in the classical music performers circle let alone the audience both in the Netherlands and the UK. Thus, Harry embarked on a two year research on British music finding out there are so many pieces written for all kinds of instrumentations which are (sometimes) played regularly or (most of the time are) never played at all. What he discovered more was that the music is also very diverse and can be programmed really beautifully. Having always had a motivation to find and curate a music festival.

De aanleiding voor het British Music Festival Holland was tijdens Harry's masterstudie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Toen hij uit het VK vertrok, ontstond er een grote interesse in Britse muziek, omdat hij ontdekte dat het niet zo veel wordt gespeeld of bekend is in de kring van klassieke muziekartiesten, laat staan ​​het publiek, zowel in Nederland als in het VK. Dus begon Harry aan een twee jaar durend onderzoek naar Britse muziek en ontdekte dat er zoveel stukken zijn geschreven voor allerlei soorten instrumenten die (soms) regelmatig worden gespeeld of (meestal) nooit worden gespeeld. Wat hij meer ontdekte, was dat de muziek ook heel divers is en heel mooi te programmeren is. Altijd al een motivatie gehad om een ​​muziekfestival te vinden en te organiseren.
