Inmiddels zijn we langzaamaan gewend geraakt aan het gegeven van een oorlog in Oekraïne. De dagelijkse berichtgeving en de politieke inslag die de media domineert, overschreeuwt het menselijke aspect. Dit boek laat de politiek voor wat het is, en laat de impact van de desastreuze Russische invasie zien op Oekraïeners door het hele land.

WIE BEN IK?
Mijn naam is Daphne Wesdorp en ik ben oorlogsverslaggever. De afgelopen maanden maakte ik de oorlog in Oekraïne van dichtbij mee, terwijl ik verslag deed vanuit de kleinste dorpjes diep in de Donbas tot Kyiv en Odessa. De media waarvoor mijn foto’s worden gebruikt zijn echter vluchtig; kranten verdwijnen in de krantenbak en berichten worden al snel verdreven door ander nieuws.

DE FOTO'S

Van begin maart tot eind juli reisde ik kriskras door Oekraïne. Ik probeerde de horror en het verlies vast te leggen, maar ook het massale verzet. Amper een maand na de invasie werkte vrijwilligersorganisaties als een geoliede machine en pakten kappers, IT'ers en leraren de wapens op en vertrokken richting het front.

In het boek staan verhalen die niet vergeten mogen worden. Bijvoorbeeld het verhaal van de punkers uit Kharkiv, die voor het eerst in hun leven een geweer oppakten en naar het front vertrokken; Nina, Igor en Leonid die stierven in hun voortuin op de eerste warme lentedag; en een groep jongeren die met gevaar voor eigen leven bewoners evacueren uit de verste uithoeken van de Donbas.

HET BOEK

Het is mijn wens om de foto’s en verhalen van de afgelopen maanden te bundelen in een boek. Dit boek laat de politieke discussie die de media domineert voor wat het is, en vertelt de alledaagse verhalen van Oekraïners in tekst en beeld.

Uitgeverij Komma heeft toegezegd mijn boek te willen uitgeven en vormgever Wout de Vringer zal het ontwerp voor het boek maken.

Ik heb jouw donatie hard nodig om de kosten te kunnen dekken en het boek zo snel mogelijk te realiseren. Ik hoop dat het boek in januari 2023 al in de winkels zal liggen.

Een deel van de opbrengst zal worden gedoneerd aan SAR (Search and Rescue) Kharkiv Donbas. Dit team van jongeren kan iedere bijdrage goed gebruiken, en ik weet zeker dat iedere cent op de juiste plek terecht komt. Andre en Pasha gaan samen met hun team tot het uiterste om verloren familieleden te traceren en achterblijvers te evacueren uit de dorpen die onder vuur liggen.

By now, we have become gradually used to the reality of war in Ukraine. In this book we leave politics aside, and show reality on the ground during the first months after the Russian invasion. This book shows how ordinary Ukrainians from all parts of the country dealt in their own way with the massive shockwave that followed after the full-scale Russian invasion.

ABOUT ME
My name is Daphne Wesdorp and I’m a reporter. During the past months, I witnessed the war in Ukraine from up close while working throughout the country; from small villages deep in the Donbas to metropolises like Kyiv and Kharkiv. The media my photos are used for are short-lived; newspapers disappear in the bin, and the reports I write are quickly forgotten due to other news.

I need your help to bundle the stories and pictures from the first months of the war, so that the stories from those crucial days will not be forgotten. Will you help me?

RESISTANCE
From the beginning of March to the end of July, I travelled throughout Ukraine. I aimed to capture the horrors the war brought upon the ordinary Ukrainians, but also the resistance that turned the country into one massive oiled machine, in which everyone played their part in contributing to the war effort.

For example the story of the punks from Kharkiv, who picked up a riffle for the first time in their lives and left for the front; Nina, Igor, and Leonid who died in their front yard on the first warm day of spring; and a group of youth who, at the risk of their own lives, evacuate residents from the farthest reaches of the Donbas.

HELP!
I wish to bundle the stories and pictures of the past month in a book. If I can raise the funds for the design and the printing costs for the first edition, Komma Publishers has agreed to publish it and designer Wout de Wringer will make the design. Help me out to cover the costs, so I can realize this book as soon as possible! I hope that the book will be in stores in January 2023.

A part of the proceeds will be donated to SAR (Search and Rescue) Kharkiv Donbas. They can use every contribution, and I'm 100% sure every cent will be spent well. Andre and Pasha, along with their team, go to great lengths to track down lost relatives and evacuate stragglers from the villages under attack.
