Mijn doel is om mijn project: Cova da Moura - Dexa Mundo Papia (Let the world talk), te exposeren in mijn allereerste solo-expositie. Daarbij heb ik jullie hulp nodig! Let’s make it happen!

Over mij
Mijn naam is Marie-Louise Hodge. Ik ben een fotografe uit Amsterdam. Mijn werk bevindt zich veelal op het snijvlak van documentair- en modefotografie. De afgelopen 1.5 jaar heb ik het leven in Cova da Moura gefotografeerd.

Achtergrond
Cova da Moura is een wijk die gebouwd is in de jaren 70 door de bewoners zelf. Velen daarvan waren Afrikaanse migranten uit de net onafhankelijke voormalig Portugese koloniën, die naar Portugal trokken voor een beter leven. Door een gebrek aan beschikbare huisvesting voor hen, zijn zij zelf huizen gaan bouwen. De wijk is uitgegroeid tot een bijzondere plek met een warme en cultuurrijke gemeenschap, maar heeft een slechte reputatie en wordt nog steeds niet erkend als legaal. Daarnaast dreigt de gemeente om de wijk te slopen, waardoor het bestaan van Cova da Moura op losse schroeven staat. Bovendien heeft de gemeenschap van Cova da Moura te kampen met diverse problemen van kansenongelijkheid zoals slechte voorzieningen, armoede, racisme en politiegeweld.

Doel
Het primaire doel van mijn project is om de inwoners van Cova da Moura een gezicht te geven, los van vooroordelen. Ik wil de schoonheid laten zien die deze speciale plek en haar hechte gemeenschap te bieden hebben. Ook wil ik bewustwording creëren over de invloed van het koloniale verleden in hedendaagse Westerse samenlevingen. Het verhaal van Cova da Moura is namelijk een weergave van veelomvattende thema’s, als armoede, ongelijke kansen en discriminatie, die heersen onder mensen met een (koloniale) migratieachtergrond in Westerse landen. Hiermee is het verhaal ook relevant in Nederland. Voorgaande thema’s zijn ook herkenbaar in mijn eigen leven - als Amsterdamse, met ouders afkomstig van de voormalig Nederlandse koloniën (Suriname en Curaçao). Met mijn expositie wil ik een bijdrage leveren aan het kunstaanbod voor de doelgroep die zich hierin kan herkennen.

Proces
Tussen mei 2021 en september 2022 heb ik periodes in Cova da Moura doorgebracht, interviews afgenomen met de bewoners en het leven gefotografeerd. Iedere keer als ik terugkwam, nam ik geprinte foto’s mee van mijn vorige bezoek. Ook gaf ik fotografie-workshops aan 20 kinderen uit de wijk.

Expositie
De foto’s die ik heb gemaakt wil ik laten zien door middel van een gratis toegankelijke expositie in Amsterdam, die ik graag in mei 2023 zou willen houden. Daarnaast wil ik een aan het project gekoppelde website lanceren waarop je, door middel van audioverhalen van de bewoners uit Cova da Moura, meer informatie over het leven in de wijk kan krijgen.

Inmiddels heb ik via kunstsubsidies een deel van de financiering rond. Echter heb ik nog een bedrag van EUR 3.200 nodig om mijn plannen te kunnen realiseren. Het opgehaalde geld wordt gebruikt voor het printen van de foto’s en het huren van een locatie.

My goal is to exhibit my project: Cova da Moura - Dexa Mundo Papia (Let the world talk), in my very first solo exhibition. I need your help with that! Let's make it happen!

About me
My name is Marie Louise Hodge. I am a photographer from Amsterdam. My work is often on the cutting edge of documentary and fashion photography. For the past 1.5 years I have been photographing life in Cova da Moura.

Background
Cova da Moura is a neighbourhood built in the 1970s by its residents. Many of them were African migrants from the newly independent former Portuguese colonies at the time, who moved to Portugal for a better life. Due to a lack of available housing for them, they started building their own houses. The neighbourhood has grown into a special place with a warm and culturally rich community, but it has a bad reputation and is still not recognized as legal. In addition, the municipality threatens to demolish the neighbourhood, which puts the existence of Cova da Moura in jeopardy. The community of Cova da Moura also faces various problems of inequality such as poor facilities, poverty, racism and police brutality.

Goal
The primary goal of my project is to give the inhabitants of Cova da Moura a face, free of prejudice. I want to show the beauty that this special place and its tight-knit community has to offer. I also want to create awareness about the influence of the colonial past in contemporary Western societies. The story of Cova da Moura reflects themes, such as poverty, inequality and discrimination, that prevail among people with a (colonial) migration background in Western countries. This makes the story also relevant in the Netherlands. These themes are also prominent in my own life - as a Dutch native, with parents from the former Dutch colonies (Surinam and Curaçao). With my exhibition I want to contribute to the art offer for people that can recognise themselves in this story.

Process
Between May 2021 and September 2022, I spent several periods in Cova da Moura, conducting interviews with the residents and photographing life. Every time I came back, I brought printed photos from my previous visit. I also gave photography workshops to 20 children from the neighbourhood.

Exhibition
I want to show the photos I made through a free exhibition in Amsterdam, which is expected to take place in May 2023. In addition, I want to launch a website linked to the project where you can get more information about life in the neighbourhood through audio stories from the residents of Cova da Moura.

I have now arranged part of the financing through art grants. However, I still need an amount of EUR 3,200 to realise my plans. The money raised will be used to print the photos and to rent a location.
