Het verhaal

Zou je je Europees kunnen voelen? Inwoner van een continent? Dat je je naast Nederlander, Utrechter of dorpeling identificeert als Europeaan? Kan dat? Of is dat wat naïef misschien?

In de documentaire What am I, a European? ga ik het zelf onderzoeken: mijn identiteit, mijn Europese identiteit. Een maand lang reizen mijn team en ik met de trein door Europa om daar met verschillende jongeren over in gesprek te gaan. Voelen ze zich Europees? Wat voelt voor hen thuis? En hoe lijkt een vakkenvuller uit Bulgarije op een jonge bakker in Frankrijk, of een student in Nederland?

Ik denk een belangrijk onderwerp in tijden van oorlog en steeds groter wordende mondiale problemen. Wij nieuwe generatie Europeanen zullen samen de toekomst moeten zien vorm te geven. Maar wie is ‘wij’ eigenlijk?

Het is voor mij een zoektocht naar verbinding die over grenzen heen kijkt. Maar het één hoeft het ander niet uit te sluiten, dat verwacht ik ook te ervaren. Hoe je tegelijkertijd verbonden kunt zijn met zowel je land, dorp als continent. Hoe verschillende identiteiten naast elkaar in harmonie kunnen bestaan.

In deze documentaire neem ik je mee op reis, van Londen tot aan Istanboel. Om uiteindelijk alle ervaringen en ontmoetingen op een rijtje te zetten en te kijken of ik mij nu meer of minder Europeaan ben gaan voelen.

Motivatie

Mijn naam is Simmo Petersen, ik studeer dit jaar af als documentairemaker aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Europa, dat is niet meer dan een continent, toch? Een aan eengesloten stuk aardkorst waar verschillende landen naast elkaar gevestigd zijn met ieder hun eigen cultuur, taal, geschiedenis en systemen. Een gebied waarbij wij hoogstens op onze vakantie in de Verenigde Staten van bewust worden gemaakt inwoner te zijn. Maar dat horen wij liever niet, want wij zijn Fransen, Nederlanders, Finnen of Roemenen. Wij verschillen en daar zijn we trots op. Onze enige echte verbintenis is economisch, de Europese Unie, maar wat daar gebeurt blijft toch vooral een raadsel. Nederlander is wie wij zijn, en Europa is slechts een bijkomstigheid.

Tot een jaar geleden dacht ik hier ook zo over. Europa en de EU leken vooral een ver-van-mijn-bed-show. Toen de mogelijkheid zich voor deed om mij daar een halfjaar in te verdiepen greep ik dat direct aan. Gesprekken met hoogleraren, een bezoek aan Brussel en voornamelijkde oorlog in Oekraïne hebben mijn mening over de Europese Unie honderdtachtig graden doen draaien. Ik zie er de noodzaak van in waarom het na verwoestende oorlogen is opgericht, de immense voordelen die het ons heeft opgeleverd en het belang van voortzetting in de toekomst. Klimaatverandering, de migratiecrisis, dreiging uit autoritaire regimes of machtige techbedrijven: het vereist aanpak op Europese schaal. We zijn niet meer in staat om de grote problemen van nu individueel per land op te lossen. Daarom zullen we elkaar nog vaak nodig hebben in de toekomst, wij Europeanen. Dat is wat mij is benadrukt.

Je kan dus wel stellen dat ik vrij pro-EU ben geworden. Maar ik zie ook hoeveel weerstand er is tegen meer Europese samenwerking en integratie. Brexit is daar een voorbeeld van, evenals het opkomende populisme. Ik denk dat dit deels te herleiden is aan een gebrekkige Europese verbinding en gedeelde identiteit. Waarom zou je je inzetten voor Europa als je je niet Europees voelt of überhaupt weet wat dat inhoudt? Dat begrijp ik zeer goed, de Europese identiteit lijkt vaak ongrijpbaar, en onverklaarbaar. Want wanneer ben je Europees? Wanneer voel je je zo? En wat zijn dan onze overeenkomsten? Het zijn zowel lastige als belangrijke vragen. Ik denk dat een sterk verenigd Europa alleen stand houdt als wij onszelf en vooral elkaar wat beter begrijpen, onze Europese identiteit. Daar wil ik in deze documentaire naar op zoek, te beginnen bij mijzelf.

Doel

Wat mij is opgevallen is dat mijn generatie nogal beperkte interesse en kennis heeft over de Europese Unie en over ‘Europeaan zijn’. Het lijkt niet zo te leven. Veel jongeren voelen zich niet betrokken bij Europa en dat snap ik best. In de documentaire What am I, a European? zou ik daar wat dieper op in willen gaan. Tevens doe ik natuurlijk een persoonlijke poging om dichter tot mijn Europese identiteit te komen en zou ik tegelijkertijd (jonge) andere Europeanen willen laten nadenken over hun verbinding met Europa en wellicht inspireren om een soortgelijke poging te wagen.

Route

De reis begint op het station in een klein dorp waarin ik al mijn hele leven woon. Vervolgens doen wij een reeks grote Europese steden aan verspreid over de breedte van het continent, waaronder in Groot Brittannië, natuurlijk interessant in het licht van de Brexit, Servië en Turkije, al jaren kandidaat-lidstaten van de EU, en Bulgarije, het land met procentueel de minste hechtenis tot Europa. Istanboel is het verste punt op de kaart dat een symbolische functie heeft omdat de zeestraat die dwars door de stad loopt Europa letterlijk scheidt van Azië. Daarnaast is het interessant om te onderzoeken of inwoners uit een islamitische cultuur zich Europeaan voelen. De combinatie tussen ‘traditionele’ Europese steden in West-Europese landen en het voor ons onbekendere Oost-Europa maakt deze reis spannend, rijk en divers.

The film

Could you feel European? Resident of a continent? That you identify as European alongside Dutchman, Utrechter or villager? Is that possible? Or is that a bit naive perhaps?

In the documentary What am I, a European? I explore it myself: my identity, my European identity. For a month, my team and I will travel around Europe by train to talk to different young people about it. Do they feel European? What does home feel like to them? And how does a shelf stacker from Bulgaria resemble a young baker in France, or a student in the Netherlands?

I think an important topic in times of war and ever-increasing global problems. We new generation Europeans will have to shape the future together. But who is 'us' anyway?

For me, it is a search for connection that looks across borders. But one does not have to exclude the other, I expect to experience that too. How you can be connected to both your country, village and continent at the same time. How different identities can coexist in harmony.

In this documentary, I take you on a journey, from London to Istanbul. To finally sum up all the experiences and encounters and see whether I have come to feel more or less European.

Motivation

My name is Simmo Petersen, I am graduating this year as a documentary filmmaker at the University of the Arts Utrecht.

Europe, that's just a continent, right? A contiguous piece of earth's crust where different countries are located side by side, each with their own culture, language, history and systems. An area where, at best, we are made aware of being inhabitants on our holidays in the United States. But we prefer not to hear that, because we are French, Dutch, Finns or Romanians. We are different and we are proud of that. Our only real connection is economic, the European Union, but what happens there remains mostly a mystery. Dutch is who we are, and Europe is just an afterthought.

Until a year ago, I thought the same way about this. Europe and the EU seemed mostly a distant memory. When the opportunity arose to immerse myself in it for six months, I seized it immediately. Talks with professors, a visit to Brussels and especially the war in Ukraine have turned my opinion about the European Union a hundred and eighty degrees. I see the necessity of why it was created after devastating wars, the immense benefits it has given us and the importance of continuing it in the future. Climate change, the migration crisis, threats from authoritarian regimes or powerful tech companies: it requires an approach on European scale. We are no longer able to solve today's major problems individually on a country-by-country basis. That is why we will often still need each other in the future, we Europeans. That is what has been stressed to me.

So you could say that I have become quite pro-EU. But I also see how much resistance there is to more European cooperation and integration. Brexit is an example of that, as is the rise of populism. I think some of this can be traced to a lack of European connection and shared identity. Why commit to Europe if you don't feel European or know at all what that means? I understand this very well; European identity often seems elusive, and inexplicable. Because when are you European? When do you feel that way? And then what are our similarities? These are both difficult and important questions. I believe that a strong united Europe will only last if we understand ourselves, and especially each other, our European identity a little better. That's what I want to look for in this documentary, starting with myself.

Goal

What I have noticed is that my generation has rather limited interest and knowledge about the European Union and about 'being European'. It doesn't seem to be alive. Many young people do not feel involved in Europe and I can understand that. In the documentary What am I, a European? I would like to explore this in a bit more depth. Also, of course, I make a personal attempt to get closer to my European identity and at the same time I would like to make (young) other Europeans think about their connection to Europe and perhaps inspire them to make a similar attempt.

Route

The journey begins at the railway station in a small village where I have lived all my life. We then visit a series of major European cities spread across the breadth of the continent, including in Great Britain, of course interesting in light of the Brexit, Serbia and Turkey, EU candidate countries for years, and Bulgaria, the country with the lowest percentage of attachment to Europe. Istanbul is the furthest point on the map that has a symbolic function because the strait that runs through the city literally separates Europe from Asia. In addition, it is interesting to explore whether residents from an Islamic culture feel European. The combination between 'traditional' European cities in Western European countries and Eastern Europe, which is still quite unknown to some of us, makes this trip exciting, rich and diverse.
