Dear friends,

Begin of December we made photographs ready for printing. After this part, I was busy with text translation and corrections. Irena Žlof, from Sarajevo has translated my text from Serbo-Croatian to English (she also translates Aleksandar Hemon's books), Mara Yerkes was first reader and advisor and Philippa Ingram did the final editing.

At this moment we are waiting for green light to be given for book printing.

As soon as book is printed I will let you know when and where presentation will be held.

Dear friends,

Sebastiaan Hanekroot, Sybren Kuiper and me are hard working on my first book "Once, when we were happy". I am very happy with the progress, but it will take even more time then I expected. I just want to let you know that at the moment I am not sure that I can publish the book in november/december as I said. More information soon. Unexpectedly I had to help my parents with their health issues ( father with eyes problems and mother with dementia).

To thank you for your understanding and support, and because you probably have to wait a little bit longer for the book I have decided to number and sign your copy.

It is a vacation period and many people are away.
That's why Voordekunst and me have decided to prolong the crowdfunding campaign until August of 3rd.

In the mean time I'll post some Updates.

This time I'll explain you old family photography.
It was July or August of 1976/77.
The place is Gradac On Sea. Gradac is a small town on the Adriatic Coast, close to Ploce and some 3-4 hours (you never know it Balkan) by train from Sarajevo. 'FAMOS' factory where my parents worked had a hotel for the workers and their families. On the photography you can see a group of kids and a grown man and behind us a legs of a man at water mattress and some boy playing alone.

I know some of the children from the photography, but I forgot their names. I think that I remember the names of only two boys: Samir is the second boy from left in the upper row and Brane is the 6th boy in the upper row.
My mother wrote on this photo. She wrote: Miso - The third one from the left is me and she wrote it correctly. On the upper right side she wrote Neven. Neven was a swimming teacher and that's right too. On the right side down she wrote the name of my brother Dragan. And that's not correct, Dragan is the boy staring in front of me.

We were happy. But who would not: Sea, sun, icecream, children, play ...

Here under short explanation, because many people ask me what about is your book and your photography.

Let me explain some things about the book:
This book is not just a migrant story and it is not just a story about the war, Bosnia and the former Yugoslavia.
I am not limited to that, because the story would be too poor and sad.
I do not want the book to be just sad, because life is not just sad.
Many people do not like migrants.
In fact, we are all migrants, we are here today and tomorrow we are not.
Perhaps this is a story of transience.
In the book I describe the events in my life.
My feelings.
My love.
My fears.
I accept, analyze, forgive, enjoy, follow and photograph the events in my life, the lives of relatives, friends and some bystander Bosnians, Herzegovinians, Serbs, Croats, Dutch, and others who do not care what their religions and nationalities are..When I make a photograph I want to make it in a poetical and magical way, so it will never bore you.

Signs along the road

It's not easy to run a crowdfunding campaign.
Sometimes I think I'm going to succeed, and there are times when I think I will not succeed.
I think this book will be an important document for Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also for the former Yugoslavia, for the relations and better understanding between the former Yugoslav nations and The Netherlands, and even Yugoslav nations and the nations of European Community.

With this book I want to open the dialogs between the people of former Yugoslavia and people abroad who are interested to help former Yugoslavs.

My mother had three brothers and four sisters. Stevo was policeman in Sarajevo. He was married with Borbala, a Hungarian woman from Temerin in Vojvodina, North Serbia. Everybody in Sarajevo called her Boriska. They had two children Slobodan, nickname Bebac, and Borisa. Borisa died a week ago and I was on his funeral where I met for the first time his younger son Dario. Dario left Sarajevo during the war in 1992 with his mother and older brother. Slobodan and Dario met there for the first time as well.

When I have started to work with designer Sybren Kuiper on my photography book project I have shown him only my photographs from Bosnia. He asked me to show him some other work and then I showd him photographs from the series "The sense (of an ending)". Some of them became a part of "Once, when we were happy". After "Once..." my wish is to make a book only with photographs from "The sense..."
