Felipe Baréa Prado is a filmmaker of Brazilian/Argentine descent who grew up in Amsterdam. A love for film has been a constant presence in his life, especially during his childhood spent in Brazil. Moving from one place to another brought a certain nostalgia with which the film medium seems to fit perfectly. Thus, Felipe moved back to South America to start his film bachelor's in Argentina and finish it in Brazil. Although that was a pretext to experience life in his father's and mother's countries as an adult again, his certainty about the power and love of the art form has only grown stronger through this experience. Currently, he is working on his master's in dramaturgy and directing at ULHT Lisbon, Portugal. Societal themes are a recurring thread in Felipe’s work. According to Prado, film is the medium to make societal pain points tangible.
The Story
"Alles is ok" is a short film about a 35 y/o man who suffers from a mysterious mental condition, because of which he hears a constant inner scream. Sylvan is a lonely person whose only wish is to live a normal and simple life, but finds this impossible due to his own broken mind. He's denied treatment by the same health-institution that got him addicted to a pharmaceutical drug and rapidly spirals into further insanity as a consequence.
Why we want and need to tell this story
This movie approaches mental health through a very personal lens where the director takes from his own experiences in order to portray an ever-growing issue.
In a lot of cases you end up filling out multiple choice questionnaires through which institutions think they can correctly evaluate what someone is going through in a very archaic means to try and quantify someone's condition. But what if what you're going through doesn't check the necessary boxes or what if they determine that your problem isn't urgent enough while your life has come to a complete halt?
Well, most institutions don't really think about what you are really going through and a 15 minute form isn't going to clarify anything.
At the end of the day it all comes down to communication, so what happens if you yourself can't seem to find a way to correctly describe what it is you are being beaten down with, does it make your suffering any less valuable because you can't find the right words? Why aren't therapists trying to think more outside the box instead of sending you from one department to the other or prescribing an overload of unnecessary medication not knowing the diagnosis "while you wait" for a treatment that never comes or comes too late?
Most of us don't have the means to access the private mental-health sector and are completely dependent on public health-care. But there's too much demand and not nearly enough staff or interest to keep it up, so an alarming amount of cases get overlooked or misdiagnosed. The dangers of this seem to fly completely under the radar, but it's deadly for in most cases it ends up in heavy addiction or suicide.
Men in particular have a hard time in expressing their issues and feel reluctant to expose their own vulnerability.
Too many loved ones have already been lost in life and in death.
So, "Alles is ok" tries to give us an intimate insight to what happens after the intakes and questionnaires, when it's just you with yourself, so that we pay more attention to the suffering that hides.
