Dag lieve mensen, mijn naam is Karine Zenja Versluis, documentaire fotograaf en verhalenmaker. Sinds 2013 ben ik bezig met het project 'Debaltsevo, Where Are You?'
Om dit project te realiseren heb ik jullie hulp hard nodig!
ZENJA
Mijn tweede naam Zenja is vernoemd naar mijn Oekraïense oma. In 1921 werd ze geboren in Debaltsevo, Donbas, Oost-Oekraïne. Toen ik geboren werd in een dorp in Overijssel moest de doka van mijn vader plaatsmaken voor mijn babykamer. Hij was fervent amateurfotograaf en heeft begin jaren zeventig nog foto's gemaakt in Debaltsevo, tijdens een familiebezoek.
In mijn project 'Debaltsevo, Where Are You? 'worden de verhalen van mijn familiegeschiedenis verweven met de ontwikkelingen in Oekraïne vanaf de tweede wereldoorlog tot nu.
ZOEKTOCHT
Met mijn eigen migratiegeschiedenis als startpunt ga vanaf 2013 op zoek naar mijn roots in Oost-Oekraïne. Tijdens deze zoektocht loopt alles anders dan verwacht: zo wordt de zoektocht zelf uiteindelijk de rode draad in het verhaal. De beelden, gedachten, gesprekken met de bevolking met op de achtergrond de context van verschillende verhalen: Het verhaal van mijn oma die in de tweede wereldoorlog vanuit Debaltsevo in Oost-Oekraïne in Duitsland terecht kwam en de huidige generatie die zeventig jaar later in 2015 in een andere oorlog vanuit exact dezelfde plaats moet vluchten en ontworteld raakt. En in 2022 wederom moet vluchten omdat ook hun nieuwe woonplaatsen niet meer veilig zijn. Allen moeten ze elders een nieuw leven opbouwen en zich verhouden tot een nieuwe realiteit.
PERSOONLIJK VERHAAL
'Debaltsevo, Where Are You?' vertelt het persoonlijk verhaal over zoeken naar je roots en de ongrijpbaarheid van deze zoektocht. Het project stelt vragen over wat het betekent om wortels te hebben op verschillende plekken, zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten. Wat zegt dit over iemand?
BOEK, TENTOONSTELLING & RANDPROGRAMMA
'Debaltsevo, Where Are You?' zal in februari 2023 gelanceerd worden met een boek, een gratis te bezichtigen tentoonstelling (o.a. bij Framer Framed Amsterdam, OBA Oosterdok Amsterdam, FOTODOK Utrecht en Verhalenhuis Belvédère Rotterdam) en randprogramma.
BOEK
In samenwerking met de fantastische vormgever Jeremy Jansen werk ik aan mijn nieuwste fotoboek 'Debaltsevo, Where Are You?' dat ik uitgeef via The Eriskay Connection. Het boek bestaat uit foto's en teksten geschreven door mijzelf, foto's van mijn vader Dick Versluis uit de jaren zeventig en foto's uit Debaltsevo van de gezinnen die ik gevolgd heb. Het boek bevat drie verschillende soorten papier en heeft een Japanse bindwijze. De voertaal is Engels met een aparte vertaling in het Nederlands en een deel van de oplage in het Oekraïens. Oplage: 750.
De boekpresentatie: zal halverwege februari 2023 plaatsvinden bij Framer Framed in Amsterdam.
DOEL DONATIE VOORDEKUNST
Een fotoboek drukken is heel erg duur, zeker in deze tijd met inflatie en oplopende papierprijzen. Het bedrag dat ik via Voordekunst hoop op te halen zal geheel gebruikt worden om de lithografie en drukkosten van het boek te dekken. Het zou fantastisch zijn als je me hiermee kunt helpen!
OVER MIJ
Mijn naam is Karine Zenja Versluis, ik ben documentaire fotograaf en verhalenmaker. In mijn werk onderzoek ik de invloed die verschillende culturen en historische gebeurtenissen hebben op het dagelijkse leven van mensen en hoe ze daar mee omgaan. Twee eerdere fotoboeken zijn van mijn hand verschenen: STAPHORST, over mijn geboortedorp en Enkeltje Schiphol over jongeren die vanuit Curaçao een nieuw leven opbouwen in Nederland.
In 2016 ging mijn eerste korte film in première op het Nederlands Filmfestival in Utrecht en was geselecteerd voor de Debuutcompetitie. Werk van mij is o.a. te zien geweest in Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, FOTODOK Utrecht, EYE Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Noorderlicht Fotofestival Groningen, Lagos Photofestival (NG), Kolga Tbilisi Photo (GE), OjodePez Photomeeting (ES), Encontros Da Imagem (PT).

ZENJA
My middle name Zenja is named after my Ukrainian grandmother. In 1921 she was born in Debaltsevo, Donbas, Eastern Ukraine. When I was born in a village in the Northeast of The Netherlands, my father's darkroom had to make way for my nursery. He was an avid amateur photographer and took pictures in Debaltsevo during a family visit in the early 1970s.In my project 'Debaltsevo, Where Are You? 'the stories of my family history are intertwined with developments in Ukraine from the Second World War to the present.
QUEST
Starting in 2013, with my own migration history as a starting point, I am looking for my roots in Eastern Ukraine. During this quest, everything goes differently then expected: the quest itself eventually becomes the red thread in the story. The images, thoughts, conversations with the population with the context of various stories in the background: The story of my grandmother who ended up in Germany from Debaltsevo in Eastern Ukraine during the Second World War and the current generation who, seventy years later in 2015, another war has to flee from exactly the same place and gets uprooted. And in 2022 they will have to flee again because their new homes are no longer safe either. They all have to build a new life elsewhere and relate to a new reality.
PERSONAL STORY
‘Debaltsevo, Where Are You?’ tells the personal story about searching for your roots and the elusiveness of this search. The project asks questions about what it means to have roots in different places, both in the Netherlands and abroad. What does this say about someone?
BOOK, EXHIBITION & EDIT PROGRAM
‘Debaltsevo, Where Are You?’ will be launched in February 2023 with a book, an exhibition that can be viewed free of charge (including at Framer Framed Amsterdam, OBA Oosterdok Amsterdam, FOTODOK Utrecht and Verhalenhuis Belvédère Rotterdam) and side programme.
BOOK
In collaboration with the fantastic designer Jeremy Jansen I am working on my latest photo book 'Debaltsevo, Where Are You?' that I publish through The Eriskay Connection. The book consists of photos and texts written by myself, photos of my father Dick Versluis from the seventies and photos from Debaltsevo of the families I followed. The book contains three different types of paper and has a Japanese binding. The official language is English with a separate translation into Dutch and part of the edition in Ukrainian. Edition: 750.
The book launch: will take place mid-February 2023 at Framer Framed in Amsterdam.

ABOUT ME
My name is Karine Zenja Versluis, I am a documentary photographer and visual storyteller. In my work I investigate the influence that different cultures and historical events have on people's daily lives and how they deal with this. Two previous photo books have been published by me: STAPHORST, about my native village and Enkeltje Schiphol about young people who build a new life in the Netherlands from Curaçao.
In 2016 my first short film premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht and was selected for the Debut Competition. My work has been shown at Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, FOTODOK Utrecht, EYE Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Noorderlicht Fotofestival Groningen, Lagos Photofestival (NG), Kolga Tbilisi Photo (GE), OjodePez Photomeeting (ES), Encontros Da Imagem (PT).
