Mijn naam is Merel Hegenbart, visueel kunstenaar.

Mijn naam is Merel Hegenbart, visueel kunstenaar.
Lieve groet,
Merel
*'100 boeken' in de video moet 150 boeken zijn.

'TRY NOT TO CHANGE - PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGES EVERYTHING' is a photobook that will make you reflect on the inherent qualities of photography as a medium. Moreover, the book will take you on an intimate journey where themes of grief, love, friendship, and freedom will be palpable.
My name is Merel Hegenbart, a visual artist. For two years I have been working on the project 'TRY NOT TO CHANGE - PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGES EVERYTHING,' which consists of a two-part book collection. Now, I need your help to realize the first edition of the second book.
The story
In 2020, a young woman from Croatia named Doro comes to live in my community. From our first encounter, I am captivated by her liberated presence, which quickly leads to a triangle between Doro, myself, and the camera. For about a year, I can't stop capturing Doro and everything between us.
Two years later, in 2022, the triangular dynamic between Doro, myself, and the camera changes: Doro returns to Croatia, leaving the camera and me behind. Without Doro's free-spirited presence, I realize that I miss this feeling of freedom within myself. Through self-portraiture, I embark on a quest to rediscover this freedom.
However, the more time I spend alone with the camera, the more I notice that photography hinders the sense of freedom. When the camera is present, life feels like a play, a performance. I become an actress in my own existence, playing the role of Merel.
But where does this longing and search for freedom originate from? Gradually, I uncover that it is linked to something entirely different from what I initially realized. The tension between me and the camera escalates until a deeper layer is revealed.
This project, called 'TRY NOT TO CHANGE - PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGES EVERYTHING,' consists of a two-part book collection. The books form one cohesive project and story, explaining and balancing each other, while also standing on their own.
Book1, 'I would love to make a photo project about you,' showcases the development of the bond between Doro and me. It also poses the question of how complete a representation of this bond is possible by presenting all the photographic and textual material in chronological order.
Book 2, also titled 'TRY NOT TO CHANGE - PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGES EVERYTHING,' begins when Doro returns to Croatia, and I embark on a search for freedom through self-portraiture.
While Book 1 will be released later, Book 2 is ready to be printed now. Through this crowdfunding campaign, I aim to produce the first edition of at least 150 photobooks of this second book. Until now I have financed everything myself, but for the printing costs of this first edition I need your help.
Please contribute by pre-ordering the photobook or purchasing one of the other rewards, so that this book can reach the world.
Thank you in advance for your support!
All the best,
Merel
