The child
My name is Rocco Damiani. I play music since my innocent 8 years old and got passionate about music thanks to my father and mother’s unusual and incredible vinyl collection. Picked up the drums as my first instrument, then switched to electric bass at 11, the feel for rhythm has never left me. Blues, punk, funk, electronic, metal, jazz, hip-hop, Latin, techno, eastern music... Growing up, I had occasion to get acquainted with many styles, mostly through amazing people I came across through music. “Rocco-Has-The-Groove” would have become my nickname, that is how my friends and colleagues have baptised me. If you happen to visit the streets of Pescara (Abruzzo, Italy) you may encounter some graffiti with my nickname. That really wasn’t my idea but, still, there they are!
As well, impossible for me to choose a favourite style from all that I listen to, play, or am about to discover. I feel I belong to all of them, as each fuels me with a precise energy and involvement. I believe this may happen to some of you too.
A musical performance ideated more than a decade ago
As a kid, I promised myself I would have accomplished some of my most important dreams. My responsibility as a grown-up is to realise such, make that kid proud of me.
Music studying and digging, I came across Snarky Puppy and Michael League. It mesmerised me to know that Michael himself, the bass player of the band, was as well leader, composer and producer of Snarky Puppy, which is a very large ensemble.
A while back, I had thoughts on how to incorporate my vision in my music, I believed it was too ambitious and out of the schemes but then, then Michael League showed me how.
As part of my graduation from HKU Utrecht Conservatorium, this concert is my attempt of reconciliation with my inner child. Here comes all my passion and knowledge for the first ever showcase of my music. The amount of people involved and the amount of time spent on its realisation got me here on the platform voordekunst. With a nonstop attitude to quality sound, I decided to choose musicians that would fit each song I composed, and I wish to pay each of them as much as they are worth. The search for a proper stage that could hold the concert brought me to Tivoli-Vredenburg, here in Utrecht, as it would perfectly fit all 30 musicians throughout the entire length of the concert. Also, I would make use of the "whamola", a single string instrument I build myself during the past years.
The concert would be professionally recorded both audio and video, to be released in the near future (you can already pre-save a copy of the video by donating here).
The Whamola
My mother was reluctant about me building this instrument. “Don’t get distracted again”, she would say, “you must finish the studies first”. She knows very well how easily I can lose the path and get fascinated by other activities. It happened in the past.
On the day I completed the build of it, I received a call from my mother: “now that you are done, take good care of what you have just made with your hands. It is a really precious instrument.” Got me in tears.
It was love a first sight for me when I first saw the whamola played by one of my idols, Les Claypool, over a video I randomly found. What I didn’t expect is that I would have built one. Started on November 2021 with a prototype, I had to work on the Opus-01 until September 2022 to finally bring it to light. Starting to work wood and then building this instrument have been one of the best ideas I’ve ever head. It really changed me. You can follow the whole process on the Instagram page @_rdwoods_

Studiando e scoprendo nuova musica, mi imbattei negli Snarky Puppy e Michael League.
È già successo in passato.
