Hi!

The documentary
Philou's Congolese mother was adopted at a young age by my Dutch grandmother. Philou was born in the Netherlands a few years later, and I followed 10 years after. Since my birth, I've known nothing else but that we are family. This bond is not defined by blood or our skin color, but by a shared and unconditional passion for music.
As his ten years younger niece, I've always been fascinated by his musical career, but it wasn't until I started working in the electronic music scene myself that I truly understood the real meaning of his musical journey. I discovered that color does play a role in that journey and that I actually knew little about who he was before the world embraced him and his talent.
What is the meaning of his music? Who is he now, amidst the glare of the spotlights? And how has that changed his life? These questions are the starting point for this documentary.
"Home is not a place, sometimes it's people, sometimes it resides within myself, sometimes in music."
(Philou Louzolo, interview for Nooit Meer Slapen of the VPRO)
Motivation
This documentary is not only a celebration of music but also depicts the quest to find 'home'. It challenges the definition of 'family' and showcases how that specific feeling can be found in the most unexpected moments and places.
Furthermore, the film offers a behind-the-scenes look at Philou's musical journey, after which the viewer not only gains a better understanding of his music but also grasps the universal power of music to connect, inspire, and bring 'home'.
Finally, the film celebrates the rise of the amapiano genre and the embrace of the 'afrodiaspora sound' in the Netherlands. With this film, we aim to contribute to the diversity and representation of people and artists of color in the music and film industries.
Help us bring this film to life!
The process of making a film comes with significant costs, and to gather the necessary funds, we need your help!
A large portion of the donations will be allocated to renting film equipment, such as cameras, lenses, lighting, and microphones. Additionally, our crew comes from all over the country, so there are travel expenses, catering costs, and of course, we aim to organize a premiere!
Your donation not only helps me graduate but also supports the screening of AFRICAN GOLD at film festivals throughout the Netherlands and contributes to diversity in the Dutch film landscape.
